Magnesium Hydroxide Paste (MGP) is a non-sterile pharmaceutical API consisting of magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH)2] suspended in water. It is supplied at Pharma Grade & In-House specification with an Mg(OH)2 assay of 19%–35%.
MGP's two main therapeutic uses are as an antacid (neutralising stomach acid in the treatment of hyperacidity, GERD and peptic ulcers) and as a saline laxative. It is the foundational API in milk-of-magnesia formulations and is often combined with Aluminium Hydroxide Gel in balanced antacid suspensions.
Magnesium Hydroxide can have a laxative effect, while Aluminium Hydroxide can be constipating. Combining them in a single antacid formulation balances those side effects and produces a faster, more sustained acid-neutralising profile.
